Waves Media: Where Our Creative Ideas Come From

Every creative team has felt it. A blank page, a deadline, and the quiet worry that this time the idea won’t come.

Here’s what years of making video have taught us: original ideas almost never come from nowhere. They come from noticing things, collecting them, and putting them together in a way nobody has before.

Good ideas are borrowed, then made new

Picasso is often credited with saying great artists steal. Long before that, Ecclesiastes said there’s nothing new under the sun. Austin Kleon built a whole book, Steal Like an Artist, around the idea.

None of them meant copy and paste. They meant this: study what moves you, figure out why it works, and use that as raw material for something that’s yours.

That’s how we approach every project.

Where we look for inspiration

Our team pulls ideas from everywhere, and very little of it is other corporate videos.

  • Film and TV. How a director builds tension, frames a quiet moment or lets a scene breathe.
  • Music. Rhythm shapes an edit more than most people realize. Sometimes an edit starts with a track.
  • Photography and design. Color, composition and texture that make something feel premium or personal.
  • Real life. The way a nurse talks to a patient, or how a founder’s hands move when they explain their product. The best details are usually right in front of us.

We keep running collections of these references. When a new project starts, we already have a deep well to draw from.

How inspiration becomes your video

Borrowing well takes discipline. Here’s how we turn a pile of references into something that fits your brand:

  • Start with your story, not the style. We figure out what your audience needs to feel and believe first. The look follows from that.
  • Build a mood board together. We share references for tone, color, music and pacing so you can react before we film anything.
  • Keep what fits, drop what doesn’t. A reference might give us one idea, like a camera move or a color palette. We take that piece and leave the rest.
  • Make it specific to you. Your people, your places and your voice are what make a video impossible to copy. That’s where we spend our energy.

The result should feel fresh to your audience, even if you can trace the influences.

Why this matters when you hire a video team

If a video could run for a competitor with only the logo swapped, it’s not doing its job. Inspiration is the starting point. Your story is what makes it original.

What inspires you? Bring it to our first conversation. We love seeing what you’re drawn to.
