At some point in almost every conversation about video, someone asks the question.
“What’s the ROI on this?”
It’s a fair question. Marketing budgets are real, scrutiny is real, and “we made something beautiful” is not a business result.
But the way most organizations frame the ROI question actually undersells what video can do — because they’re only looking at one or two places it might pay off, when the real return is spread across the entire organization.
Most video marketing ROI conversations about video focus on one thing: leads or sales. Did it drive traffic? Did it convert? What did we get back?
Those are legitimate metrics. But they capture maybe a third of what a well-made video actually does — and for many organizations, not even the most important third.
Video doesn’t just live in marketing. It works in fundraising, recruiting, internal communications, donor relations, board presentations, customer onboarding, and brand awareness. When you only measure it against one of those outcomes, you’re asking a spreadsheet to evaluate something that’s working in six other rooms you’re not looking at.
Where Video Is Actually Working
Think about all the places a single well-made brand video can go.
A non-profit uses it in a donor meeting and raises more in that conversation than they did in the previous three meetings combined — because the video said in two minutes what a deck couldn’t say in forty.
A healthcare organization puts it in front of a prospective health system partner and gets a follow-up call the same day. The video made the case before anyone had to make it.
A company shares it internally at an all-hands and for the first time, every department feels like they’re part of the same story. Alignment that used to take a year of messaging work happens in a single viewing.
A recruiter sends it to a candidate who was on the fence. The candidate accepts the offer. Not because of the salary. Because the video made them feel what the culture was before they ever walked in the door.
None of those outcomes show up in a Google Analytics report. All of them are real. All of them have real value.
The Question Nobody Asks
The question that almost never gets asked in the ROI conversation: what does it cost not to have this?
What does it cost when a donor doesn’t give because they couldn’t feel the mission? When a great candidate passes because they couldn’t get a sense of who you are? When a prospective partner moves on because your pitch didn’t land the way it needed to? When your internal team is pulling in different directions because no one has ever told your story clearly enough for everyone to rally around it?
Those are real costs. They just don’t show up on a line item.
The ROI of great brand video isn’t only what it generates. It’s also what it prevents — the missed connections, the lost opportunities, the moments where your brand needed to communicate and couldn’t.
Building Toward an Answer
The organizations that make the strongest case for video investment internally aren’t the ones who point to a single video and say “that generated X.” They’re the ones who can show everywhere it’s working — in fundraising, in recruiting, in sales, in culture — and make the case that consistent, high-quality video is one of the few investments that works across every function of the organization at once.
That case gets stronger the more video you have. And it gets built one piece at a time.
At Waves, we help organizations build video that works across the full arc of what they do — not just one campaign, one audience, or one outcome. If you’re thinking about how video could work harder inside your organization, we’d love to have that conversation.
