For those who’ve seen it, you may remember Mel Gibson’s “The Patriot” movie (set during the Revolutionary War). There’s a scene where he reminds his boys how to shoot. “Aim small, miss small” he tells them. The idea being, if you aim for the whole man, you may miss. But if you aim for a button on that man’s jacket, you may miss the button but you’ll still hit the man.
We feel that that idea rings true for us all in our focus at work. We are constantly enamored with all the glitter and glamour of new things. Or, perhaps, feel the pressure to always “keep up” with the ever-changing trends of video and beyond. But real value and success most often results from staying focused on fewer things, where you can then “go big”. Things that have stood the test of time for you and your brand as important, meaningful, and of value to you and your customer.
Don’t get us wrong, feel free to test the waters to see what works. We at Waves encourage you always to try new things! Just remember as you do to see what’s working, as well as what’s not. Then hone in on what is, and pursue it passionately.
So, what does this strategy have to do with video? A lot, actually. Especially in the field of video creation, it is so important to focus your target. Why, you might ask? Because there is so much video out there! With so many competitors, so many video “trends”, and constant click-baits, it pays to be a steady creator of solid video. To know what it is you and your brand believe in, and to create your video content from that source, no matter the year.
So, ask yourself these questions from time to time. Consider it your regular “check-in” for both you and your company’s health.
Drill down. The more tuned in you get the better. Remember: aim small, miss small.
