5 Common Myths About Creating Video

November 12, 2024

If you live in this world, you’ll know the power and popularity of video because it’s, well, everywhere. But do you know how to create good, high quality video? And what preconceived notions do you have that may (or may not) be correct about it? Today were tackling these, and covering 5 common myths about creating video.

1. “I don’t look good on camera.”

If we had a dollar for every time we heard this phrase, we’d have a lot of dollars. And we get it. Being in front of the camera can be nerve-wracking, and make anyone feel self-conscious. So it’s no surprise this is one of the common myths about creating video. But, truly, there is no reason it has to be. Why? Because with the proper preparation, anyone can (and will) look like a seasoned pro onscreen.

Some tips on how? For starters, getting the script before the shoot will give adequate time to rehearse and go over any lines you may have. Secondly, having someone off-camera for you to speak to can help relax any stress, and distract you from the camera’s focus. Having a teleprompter is another great way to relieve the pressure of memorizing lines or touch points. And lastly, hiring a professional hair and makeup artist (along with bringing multiple wardrobe options) will help make you feel and look your best.

2. I have an iPhone. I’ll just film it!

Ok, disclaimer out of the way: we love iPhones, and firmly believe they are excellent for creating some wonderful DIY video. But when it comes to high quality video that represents your brand, they’re not always going to cut it.

For one, your video is your calling card. It’s the first impression you make. Meaning, your audience is going to make judgements on your brand’s quality level when they watch your videos. Which is why it’s important to have videos that reflect that. Picture and audio quality play a huge part in this, as well as the power of a good edit.

Not only that, but as far as iPhones have come, they still don’t compete with the vast possibilities of a pro camera. By investing in professional level video, your content will be that much more beautiful, interesting, and compelling to your audience.

3. I’ve got iMovie. Who needs an editor?

Again, we applaud Apple for its great products that enable some amazing creativity. But when it comes to your brand’s video, you’ll not only want to invest in high level equipment but also in those who know how to use it.

For one, never belittle the final step of the video process: the editing and overall “post-production”. It is the making of the video as much as any other step. The power of a good editor can change the entire dynamic, feel, and flow of your video. It’s really a “make it or break it” piece of the process.

Not only this, but the value of working with video professionals who have been trained to use their gear most effectively knows no bounds. Think about it. You wouldn’t sew your own clothes unless you were an adept tailor! And if you did, they’d probably not look their best, making you not look your best at the same time. The same applies to video. It pays to hire those who know what they’re doing.

4. It costs a fortune to make a video!

Here is one of the biggest misconceptions about video creation: it’s too expensive. Yes, we admit the cost of creating high quality video can seem a bit extravagant. But, as with most things, it’s all about perspective.

To begin, video can be evergreen. Meaning, a well-produced video can last for years, depending on how specific the topic. So, instead of looking at the price tag as creating just one video, remember you’re investing in content that can play over and over again to new audiences for a very long time.

Adding to this, video can easily be repurposed. Want to get more bang for your buck? Cut down your longer video to shorter versions! Or take the audio of it and turn it into a podcast! Again, when viewed creatively, your video pays you back over and over again.

5. Video needs to go viral in order to be successful.

In this world of “viral” videos and “overnight” YouTube sensations, it’s easy to think these are the only ways to achieve video success. But think again. While views and shares are important when it comes to your content, there are more factors to be considered.

Remember, your video should always be geared towards your specific audience. After all, if they don’t connect to it, what was the point of it in the first place? With that in mind, having only 50-100 views of a video doesn’t necessarily mean it was a failure. If you connected to even 30 of those people with your content, guess what? You just grew your customer base by 30! It’s in these “smaller” steps that big brands grow.

At the end of the day, true success lies in consistent output that nets consistent input. If you create solid video with a steady pace, and engage with those who watch it, you’ll see reliable success that will keep you growing for years.
